Webb's Picks for This Year's CMA Awards Winners

Well, you know what they say, the early dog gets the cat, or something like that. Anyway, I wanted to be one of the first to proclaim my picks as to who will bring home the hardware (that’s entertainment media type talk for trophies) at this year’s 44th Annual CMA Awards. So here’s my lucky dog picks:

Song of the Year – The award goes to the songwriters on this one. I’m gonna go with “A Little More Country Than That”, written by Rory Feek, Don Poythress and Wynn Varble. First of all, you can’t get any more country than this because the song title is like infinity (just keep saying it) and secondly anyone with a names like Feek, Poythress and Varble deserve some kind of recognition.

Single of the Year – This one goes to the artist and producers. “Hillbilly Bone” is the runaway winner with this one. Actually the song could be “City Bone”, “Urban Bone”, “Suburban Bone”, “Illegal Immigrant Bone”; or whatever. If it has “Bone” in the title, it’s gotta be good.

Vocal Duo of the Year – This one goes to the vocal duo. I’m going to have to choose Joey + Rory in this category. There’s several reasons. I love Rory’s overalls. I love Joey period. That song about white trash or whatever it was they did was pretty dog gone good. And I know they love dogs! Oh yeah, they can sing and play pretty darn good too.

Vocal Group of the Year – This one’s really got me chasing my tail. I’m a pretty big fan of both Lady Antebellum and Zac Brown Band…hmmm…how to decide. I’m gonna choose Lady A for two reasons, they got the good looking lady and that poor old Dave Haywood has trouble getting dates, even getting his mom to accompany him to the CMA’s. So they win part pretty, part pity.

New Artist of the Year – This one goes to someone who’s new and an artist. While I’d like to give it to Jerrod Niemann because he’s gonna say I “don’t treat him no good no more” if I don’t; I’ll go with Easton Corbin. He just reminds me too much of George Strait.

Female Vocalist of the Year – Whew, what toughie. You got queen Reba, Martina McBride who’s THE best voice in country music, Carrie Underwood who’s second only to Martina, Miranda Lambert that’s full of piss and vinegar, and Taylor Swift. I’m gonna roll with Martina. She is the best voice after all. Sorry all you others, I love you too. Woof.

Male Vocalist of the Year – I gotta go with Keith Urban in this category over Dierks, Brad, Blake and George. Why? He’s a much better search engine term to use. Woof.

Album of the Year – It goes to the artist and producer. Are you ready for this? And I’m serious. Up On The Ridge by Dierks Bentley and Jon Randall Stewart. It’s as country as a turnip green so I dig it.

Entertainer of the Year – My choices here are Lady A, Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban and Zac Brown Band. I’m going with Miranda. Not only is she really good, but I’m afraid she’ll come whoop my rear if I don’t choose her for something.

So what do you think?  Did I nail 'em?
