Tim McGraw had a unique method for warming up before shows during his early career, but time has changed things for the better. What started out with shots has become a healthy jog to help prep for a show.

“In the past, to get warmed up for the show, everybody would do a shot or something,” McGraw told CMT. “It warmed you up for the show, got you loose, and you’re ready to go. I found myself halfway through the show before I really felt like I was into the show [and] felt like I was really able to enjoy it. Then by the time the show was over, I felt like I really wanted to keep going…hence why you kept going after the show by having beers.”

Moving away from the alcohol, McGraw and his band and crew now run for three miles before a show. The results are far more positive than a shot of alcohol.

“It’s such a great warm-up to go get a three mile run in, then come in and sort of go real quick on stage right after that,” said McGraw. “You’re already warmed up, you get going into the show and you’re fired up. Everything’s pumping, and by the end of the show it’s done, and it’s been a good deal.”

McGraw credits his wife, Faith Hill, for the change in lifestyle. “Faith has kept me alive," he explained. "She’s saved [me] in a lot of different ways – from myself more than anything. She’s loved me through times when I didn’t love me. I can go down a dark road sometimes, when you’re not feeling good about yourself – and she pulls me out.”

McGraw is currently on his Southern Voice tour with Lady Antebellum and Love and Theft.
