Comedian Steve Martin combines talents with bluegrass artists Steep Canyon Rangers (SCR) on his sophomore album, "Rare Bird Alert," which hit stores on March 15.

While teamed with Martin, the band played for more people than any other bluegrass band in 2010. 2011 has the makings of being bigger and better as the band prepares to tour with Martin.

The Rare Bird Tour kicks off in New York City with three pre-sold out performances at the famous Joe’s Pub on March 15-17 as well as returned appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman on March 16 and The View on March 17.

A seasoned banjo player and songwriter, Martin handpicked SCR to tour and record with him last year, and the band jumped at the chance. “Serendipity has made a better match than any bluegrass computer dating service,” joked Martin.

The title track “Rare Bird Alert,” with its melancholy and passionate tunes, perfectly captures the art of bird watching. “Best Love” features the talents of Paul McCartney and country sensation the Dixie Chicks appear on the track “You.” On “Go Away, Stop, Turn Around, Come Back,” SCR’s lead singer, Woody Platt, tells the story of love, breakup and reunion, while “Jubilation Day” bounces with the delight and renewed vigor that can come from a breakup. The album finishes on a comedic note with “Atheists Don’t Have No Songs” and “King Tut.”

SCR and Martin have blazed the trail for bluegrass music, headlining at shows such as Bonnaroo, Merlefest, New Orleans Jazzfest and Newport Folk Festival. The duo have introduced millions to the style of bluegrass tunes and show no signs of stopping anytime soon.
