Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush of Sugarland have found new sources of inspiration for their upcoming release, The Incredible Machine. The pair, who have sold more than eight million records and have won several Grammy, CMA and ACM Awards, were influenced by movies and songs from their childhood.
“When we were writing, we asked what if John Hughes were making movies now.... Who would be on the soundtrack?” Bush said. “If you dig far enough you’re going to see that The Clash and Johnny Cash had a lot in common. I like to live right where those guys meet.”
The Incredible Machine is a collection of anthems meant to recall the beating of the human heart with powerful songs like “Stand Up” and “All We Are”.
“This record is designed to play in very large places and to communicate with a large group of people,” Bush confirmed. “When you have an instrument as powerful and as graceful as Jennifer’s voice, you don’t want to tip-toe in. You really go for it! And those types of songs are often where Jennifer and I intersect musically.”
The album also contains some lighter melodies, such as “Stuck Like Glue,” which debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in its second week, making it the first Country song to debut that high on the chart.
“We write songs for different reasons. There are some songs that we want to change your life and there are some that we just want to change your day. That’s what ‘Stuck like Glue’ is,” Nettles laughed. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously, and that’s what fans love.”
“It’s just the two of us,” said Bush. “In the story of who we are, this album is more us than we’ve ever been.”
The Incredible Machine is scheduled for release on Oct. 19.
