John Rich has responded to an alleged anti-gay remark Chely Wright said he made to her years ago at an Opryland performance.
, Wright wrote in her memoir, released this week, that Rich had asked her point blank if she was gay. Wright, who recently revealed she was, in fact, homosexual, lied years ago to avoid embarrassment.
"[John] said, 'You're not gay are you?" Wright recalled. "I said, 'No, John, I'm not.' He said, 'Good, thank God.' And that began a spiral for me ... I had a meltdown shortly after that."
During a recent interview with Access Hollywood.com, Rich offered an apology for a conversation he insists was misconstructed.
"For years after that conversation, Chely invited me to perform at charity events," he said. "In all that time, I wish she would have said something directly to me before the book's publicity tour, especially since some of the comments attributed to me in the book are not mine. But I am happy for her and only wish her the best in her personal and professional life."
AOL's The Boot reports Wright is a little skeptical of his explanation and apology, due to Rich’s history of expressing views against homosexuality.
