Being in the spotlight and under constant criticism is no easy task for any person to handle, even if that person has been in the spotlight for years. Just ask LeAnn Rimes, who has recently gone under the paparazzi microscope for her divorce from Dean Sheremet after falling in love with another man. However, with every mistake comes a lesson, and Rimes is all about staying positive and learning from her wrong-doings.

Rimes, whose new album Lady & Gentleman will be hitting shelves Oct. 5, recently sat down with Shape magazine to discuss the recent events of her life for their October issue, on stands now. Most importantly, she spoke of how she found herself within all the ups and downs through friends, family, therapy, exercise and other mediums that helped her cope.

“I find writing to be one of the most cathartic things I can do. I get my feelings out on paper, and then I don’t have to carry them around anymore,” Rimes said. “I also pray, and I meditate when I can actually shut down my brain. It’s a matter of finding the magic combination of what settles you, relaxes you and makes you happy.”

Perhaps one of the most beneficial methods Rimes used to cope was hitting the gym. “Sometimes I felt so depressed I didn’t want to get out of bed,” Rimes said. “It really did make me feel better and kind of saved me. It gave me a bit of sanity. Even now, on days when I’m really frustrated, I’ll walk into the gym and say to my trainer, ‘We’re doing a boxing workout today. For an hour. I need to hit things.’”

Rimes is taking her new-found strength and using it to deal with her problems head on and at full force. “I understand why people are disappointed in me, especially since I grew up as America’s sweetheart,” Rimes said. “I don’t think the way I did it was right. I truly believe there are lessons in it for me to learn. Cultivating strength from rough situations is the most important thing.

"After going through this, I know I can face anything.”
