9/6/2007 Stephen L. Betts WMCTV.com in Memphis reports that Sammy Kershaw officially entered the race for lieutenant governor of Louisiana on Wednesday (Sept. 5). He'll challenge incumbent Mitch Landrieu. Sammy, who's running on the Republican ticket, was born in Abbeville and raised in Kaplan, Louisiana. He says he will prove wrong the critics who've accused him of running for public office to garner attention for his music career. Married to singer Lorrie Morgan since 2001, earlier this year Sammy filed for bankruptcy, listing his creditors as the Internal Revenue Service, banks, lawyers and others. Sammy’s not the first country music figure in Louisiana politics - Country Music Hall of Fame member Jimmie Davis (“You Are My Sunshine”) served two non-consecutive terms as governor of the state from 1944-1948 and 1960-1964.
