After spending the last several years headlining sold-out tours, Kenny Chesney announced last year that he would be taking a year off the touring circuit. During his downtime, Chesney filmed a documentary highlighting his passion for football entitled The Boys of Fall.

As a high school student at Gibbs High in Luttrell, Tenn., Chesney was a wide receiver for his alma mater’s team.

"I was the starting wide receiver, which tells you how great we were. And I quit growing my freshman year," Chesney told Sioux Falls radio station KIKN. "But I now know why we practiced longer, why our coach put us through double practices in the summer heat ... all those things he put us through. It was to teach us things me and everybody on our team has used to become the people we are."

Chesney, who counts several football greats as friends, including John Madden, Brett Farve, Troy Aikmen and Sean Payton, used the sport as a metaphor for his own life.

"Anyone who knows me knows how much I look to football, the lessons learned, the experiences, the feelings as a map for living life, having a music career, being the kind of man I want to be."

The Boys of Fall was inspired by a song that was pitched to Chesney.

"When I was looking for songs for my album, someone pitched me 'The Boys of Fall' and it struck me as everything I think and feel about that experience," Chesney said. "That song was like striking a match!"

This isn’t Chesney’s first foray into the film industry. Last summer’s Summer in 3-D captured live footage of several of his stadium shows across the country.

Aside from working on his next studio album and filming documentaries, Chesney also has his own clothing line.
