Despite announcing that he would not be hosting a 2010 summer tour, Kenny Chesney has been planning ahead to give his fans something to tide them over until his return to the bright lights. Chesney has compiled footage from his latest tour to create a 3-D movie. He took footage from concert stops in Pittsburgh, Boston, Indianapolis, Seattle and Philadelphia. Summer in 3-D hits theaters in April 2010.
The idea came after he saw U2's 1998 3-D film and wanted to do something similar. “I'd seen U2's movie and was blown away,” Chesney said. “It was like something I'd never seen - and I wondered what would happen if we tried to capture some of what was going on like that…When we did, everyone who saw the footage agreed, and we started taking this project very seriously.
Using 22 3-D camera setups, Chesney virtually brings his fans directly onto the stage, walking beside him backstage or riding alongside him on the tour bus. He admitted the filming process was overwhelming at times, saying, “It was an amazing - and at times scary - experience to have cameras that close, in the air, on a blimp…cause they are everywhere." He joined with Sony Pictures Entertainment to edit the footage.
“To me on that stage, I feel every single one of my fans - all the way to the very top of those stadiums," Chesney said. "But this is like having everyone right there onstage with us, and it's a rush… I had no idea what we do could go to film quite like that.
