4/1/2008 Lisa Ann Schleipfer Country Music singer Kathy Mattea is set to release her new album, Coal, on April 1.  GAC reports that Mattea’s latest effort isn’t a radio record, but rather an introspective look at the life of a coal miner.  The songs deal with many different aspects of a miner’s life, from health issues to labor relations. The concept album was inspired by the Sago Mine Disaster 2006, the coal mine explosion in Virginia that had 13 miners trapped for days, only one of which survived.  The tragedy isn’t the only source for the material:  Mattea’s grandfathers were miners and her mother worked for the miner’s union. According to GAC, Kathy Mattea recently told The Orange County Register, "If you can keep growin' in your art, what else is there?" she said. "To not be going through the motions, but to really be digging deep — no pun intended — to be technically, lyrically, point of view-wise, to be tacklin' a new genre of music, it's just exciting. I thought it'd just be that little coal record I would make for six months, but it's been life-changing." For the full story visit http://www.gactv.com/
