Jimmy Wayne kicked off his Meet Me Halfway project on New Year’s Day when he began his walk halfway across the country in order to raise awareness of homeless children, teens and young adults who no longer fit the age requirements of the foster care system. The walk started in Nashville, where 75 people joined him during the first mile, and will end in Phoenix, according to a news release.

Wayne not only wants to bring awareness to the children and teen homeless situation, but he also wants to raise funds for organizations assisting these youth, such as Nashville’s Monroe Harding as well as HomeBase Youth Services based out of Phoenix.

The first few days of travel have proved to be challenging with the Southeast temperatures down to single-digits, and looking that way the rest of the week. “I knew it was going to be cold, but I didn’t think it’d be this cold for this long,” Wayne laughed.
“It’s been tough going the past four days. But when I get down, I just think about the kids at Monroe Harding, and all the kids like them around the country who may really be facing a homeless situation once they are too old for foster care and group homes. That keeps me going,” he said.
Marmot Sportswear has supplied Wayne with crucial cold weather gear for his walk, The Valory Music Co. has donated $50,000.
