As of Thursday, April 1, Jimmy Wayne has been traveling on his cross-country Meet Me Halfway walk for three months. Wayne embarked on the journey from Nashville to Phoenix on Jan. 1, intending to raise awareness of homeless youths, teens and young adults. Wayne thought he would arrive in Phoenix by April but was slowed down by harsh ice storms, a stolen suitcase and illness. He arrived at the halfway point on Saturday – Amarillo, Texas.

"I thought I would be here a long time ago," said Wayne, who was once a homeless teen himself. "I'm definitely tired. I love the experience, and I'm not going to give up. But, yes, I do wish it was over. You just want it to come to an end, but you just keep going."

The day-to-day challenges have varied since Wayne left Nashville. The snow and ice storms that slowed him down a few months ago are gone, and now heat is the daily obstacle.

What hasn't changed is the support Wayne has received along the way. He said that hardly a day has gone by that someone hasn't stopped to offer help. And since he crossed into Texas, he hasn't had to sleep in his tent because strangers have invited him into their homes.

"The hospitality here has been really, really cool," he said. "Now they see me as the guy walking for the homeless teens. You feel real, and the people you meet, you feel like they're real because they're not seeing you as the artist, but as the guy walking."
