Country star Jimmy Wayne is nearing the end of his Meet Me Halfway Walk, a 1,700-mile trek on foot to benefit at-risk teens who age out of the foster care system only to become homeless.

Wayne developed the idea for Meet Me Halfway in December 2009 while adjusting the thermostat in his own home. He decided to do something for those unable to stay warm so easily. Within days, Wayne announced that he would travel from Nashville to Phoenix. He is now 60 miles from the Arizona state line.

Upon the completion of his journey, Wayne plans to keep his project alive by starting a foundation. He also plans to walk through one state every January to continue raising awareness for at-risk teens.

Wayne has not only walked, but has also had the opportunity to stand before the California and Washington, D.C., senates, only increasing the impact of his message.

Wayne said that he would like to present his cause to the president next.

"I envision that someday I'm going to have the chance to sit down and talk to the President of the United States," he said. "I believe that he's going to hear me. Obama is a President who comes from a single parent. He relates to everybody. He's a Country song. That's what he reminds me of. He started networking and politicking in barber shops and small places. He did it the old fashion way. That's why he had so many people vote for him. I learned a lot by watching that on TV. I thought, 'you know what? That's what I'm going to do with Project Meet Me Halfway.' You can't get more grass roots than walking halfway across America, meeting people on back roads ... going to their house and talking to them about it."

Wayne continues to post updates from his journey on Twitter @jimmywayne.
