Learning to play the guitar for her upcoming role in the film “Country Strong” didn’t come without a scary self-diagnosis for Gwyneth Paltrow

Paltrow’s bleeding fingers, cramps and shoulder problems led her to believe she had developed cancer, but after visiting a doctor, she learned she was suffering from a pulled muscle in her armpit.

“It was a disaster,” said the Oscar award-winning actress who plays Kelly Canter, a fallen country star who hopes to reclaim her glory.

Paltrow admitted learning to play the guitar was very frustrating.

“My fingers wouldn't respond to the signals my brain was [sending],” she said. “It took so long to get my fingers to do what my brain wanted them to do.”

Paltrow describes her character as “somebody who was kind of coming off her hinges” and mentions the opportunity to portray such a reckless person was very liberating.

“My life is so ordered….I loved playing someone who didn’t worry about consequences,” she said. “As an actor, it was just a dream to play her.”

“Country Strong” is set to hit theaters nationwide on January 7.
