Guy-Clark

With the announcement of release of his newest album, Somedays the Song Writes You, Guy Clark discussed the inspiration that goes into the songwriting process. Clark’s newest album introduces three youthful songwriting partners who are present on half the songs: Patrick Davis, Jedd Hughes and Ashley Monroe.

“I used to write exclusively by myself,” Clark said. “I really enjoy writing with other people. Once, I learn a lot musically. Like Jedd is a fantastic guitar player. He comes from a whole other place and comes up with stuff that I never think of doing or exploring. And I really enjoy that part of it.”

While Clark introduced new talent in his songwriting partners with, many of his old friends, including Rodney Crowell and Shawn Camp collaborated in the songwriting process.

The only track that isn’t written by Clark is one by his late best friend, Townes Van Zandt, in continuing Clark’s tradition to include a Van Zandt composition on each of his albums. Clark said “If I Needed You” was first heard by he and his wife Susanna in their own home.

“That particular song, Townes was living with Susanna and I,” Clark said. “He woke up one morning and played this song, and he said he had dreamed it.”

Somedays the Song Writes You will hit shelves Sept. 22.
