Darius Rucker is still shocked that a Country label would sign him, let alone that he would be successful. He even called himself a bad investment, telling reporters, “I wouldn’t have signed Darius Rucker.”

But he spent Thursday night celebrating his platinum certification for Learn to Live at Nashville’s Sambuca restaurant.

During the party, Rucker credited Mike Dungan, president of Capitol Nashville who attended the party with Rucker’s manager Doc McGhee and producer Frank Rogers, for taking the risk.

"Everybody that's talked to me about this knows how much this means to me," said Rucker. "You know, I started this a long time ago. The first time I talked to Doc about it, Doc probably thought it was one of the worst ideas he had heard. But, you know, he came around. I'm happy for me, but if this hadn't worked for me, I would have gone on. I would have gone on and spent my millions and lived my life and been fine."

The Country star went on to tell Dungan, "But you, man, took a chance on something that nobody really wanted. You talk to anybody that's running a label right now, and they'll tell you they would have signed me. And they're all lying. You took a chance. ... I'm happy for me. But, damn, I'm happy for Mike Dungan."

Darius Rucker’s celebrated the new platinum status for his debut album at the private party after 1 million units shipped.
