Carrie Underwood is a hugely successful Country Music singer-songwriter who has seen her star rise rapidly since her debut in 2005.  The winner of nearly 40 major musical awards, including five Grammys, four CMAs, and six ACM Awards, Underwood has achieved in just four years what most other artists would hope to achieve in a lifetime.

Carrie Marie Underwood was born March 10, 1983 in Chekotah, Oklahoma, where she was raised on her parents’ farm.  As a child, she would sing at talent shows, church gatherings, and other local events. After high school, she attended Northeastern State University in Talequah, Oklahoma, where she graduated in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication.In the summer of 2004, Underwood auditioned for American Idol in St. Louis.  She was named a finalist, and was crowned the winner of the show’s fourth season May 25, 2005.Some Hearts, Underwood’s debut album, was released on Arista Nashville November 15, 2005 and made the top spot on Billboard’s Country Albums list, making it the first debut album to premier at number one since the advent of the SoundScan system in 1991.  Some Hearts is certified septuple (is this 7x?  should we say it diff)  platinum, and is one of the fastest selling albums in Country Music history, with such hits as “Jesus Take the Wheel,” “Don’t Forget to Remember Me,” and “Before He Cheats.”Underwood released Carnival Ride, her second and most recent album, October 23, 2007.  She was more involved in the songwriting process this time around, collaborating with highly successful writers Craig Wiseman and Gordie Sampson.  The record was certified double platinum as of December 14, 2007.

Underwood was a broadcast journalism major at Northeastern State, and had actually given up on singing, feeling it was time to find her way in the real world.  Only after constant encouragement from her friends and family did Underwood decide to go to St. Louis for the Idol audition—which she admits she was extremely nervous about.She is also a skilled guitarist and has plays during concerts from time to time.Carrie has been a vegetarian since the age of 13, and PETA has voted her “World’s Sexiest Vegetarian.” She has been romantically linked with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who was her date to the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2007.
