Carrie Underwood has become one of the most popular Country stars on the scene today. Her success found a footing through her run on the popular show, American Idol. However, the road she took to gain her place among Country's greatest has been met with some speculation and criticism.

Some have argued that Underwood never paid the dues necessary to earn her place as a Country star. Many Country artists struggle to be noticed by playing shows at bars for years. Underwood’s success appeared to be far simpler, but Underwood explains things in a new light.

“Nobody ever came up to me and pointed a finger and said, ‘You shouldn’t be here.’ But it was always, ‘So and so said such and such.’ But can you honestly imagine me spending 20 years singing in bars trying to make it? That doesn’t fit me at all. And my family didn’t have the money to pay for a demo. So what was I going to do? Idol was the door God opened for me, and I took my chances.” Underwood told USA Weekend.

While Underwood may have taken a different path, she continues to grow in fame and recognition through her ability. She won the Video of the Year fan-voted honor at Wednesday night's 2010 CMT Music Awards.
