Canadian Singer-Songwriter Kate McGarrigle Dies

Canadian singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle lost her battle with cancer Monday at age 63. McGarrigle was best known for her work with her sister, Anna, as a recording duo. They released 10 albums during their career. 

McGarrigle is the former wife of Loudon Wainwright III and the mother of singer-songwriters Rufus and Martha Wainwright.

The McGarrigle sisters gained popularity in the U.S. after Linda Ronstadt chose one of Anna's songs, "Heart Like a Wheel," as the title track of her 1974 album. McGarrigle’s other songwriting credits include "Talk to Me of Mendocino" and "Heartbeats Accelerating (recorded by Ronstadt) and "Going Back to Harlan" and "Love Is" (recorded by Emmylou Harris).

Ronstadt, Harris and Dolly Parton also recorded her "I've Had Enough" for their 1987 album, Trio. Ronstadt and Harris appeared on the sisters' 1998 album, The McGarrigle Album, which also featured Loudon, Rufus and Martha Wainwright.
