2012 Will Be A Year of Change, Just Not In Country Music

First of all I hope everyone's 2012 is a great year filled with the things you love.  For me that means a lot of bones, bushes, food left unattended and maybe a bitch or two.  My resolution is to lay around more, if that's possible?

So what do you think we can look for in 2012 in country music?  Here's my predictions:

  • Digital downloads will continue to grow, whether legal or not, while sales of cd's declines.
  • Taylor Swift will be a media darling.
  • Brad Paisley will play tricks on whoever his tour mates are.
  • Carrie Underwood will be a class act.
  • Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton will still be country music's reigning couple as long as they continue to act more "country" than Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.
  • Luke Bryan will talk very southern.
  • Jason Aldean will be cool.
  • The CMA Music Festival will rock, in a country kind of way.
  • Country music radio will play the same 20-30 songs everyday based on what the listener research shows.
  • Music Row won't figure out the whole digital age thing.
  • Mindy McCreary will make news that has nothing to do with country music.
  • Lady Gaga will make a country music record, maybe a duet with Toby Keith.

That's just a short list and yes you get the point, not a lot will change with country music because the industry isn't likely to change much unless their revenue significantly changes for the worse.  No gamblers here.

Why I Don't Want Anything For Me For Christmas

My humans love me so much they’d do just about anything for me, except give me that steak sitting there on the counter marinating. They’re all the time lately asking me what I want for Christmas. Sometimes human’s aren’t so bright. If I could tell them I would have already, but I can’t talk.

But if I could talk, you know what I’d tell them? I’d tell them I don’t want anything because I’ve already got everything I need. In case you can’t tell by looking at me, I never miss a meal. In fact I get all kinds of snacks in between meals either by giving people that cute begging look, or just snatching any food within reach (and I have a very long reach) while no one’s looking.

I have a warm place to sleep every night too. Well, okay, for most of the day too (a dog needs his rest). I have a huge backyard to play in, catch critters like squirrels and rabbits, or just lie in the sun. There’s plenty of sticks back there to chew on too. And if that’s not enough, I still get to go for walks at least once a day.

I have my good dog friend Buddy who lives with me and keeps me company. He’s a Coonhound. Even though he bites me on the butt sometimes I know he loves me.

Most of all I have a family that loves me dearly. They think I’m very amusing. And all I have to do is be there waiting for them when they come home with a wagging tail. Talk about having someone in the paw of your hand. I wish more dogs had my life, maybe even a few cats.

So if you really want to know what I want for Christmas, it’s nothing for me because I have all I need. All I want is for more humans to take care of all these dogs, cats and other pets in need of a good home.

Merry Christmas! Woof.

I'm Doggin' Some Of These CMA Award Nominees

Webb August 2011 Up Close

What’s your take on the CMA Award Nominations?  Here's mine:

  • Jason Aldean’s become a great entertainer, or hired a better publicist.
  • Brad Paisley’s staying power is pretty strong. He could be the next Little Jimmie.
  • I like Blake Shelton a lot and think he deserves all his nominations, but that “Honey Bee’ song sounds so cornball to me. You?
  • Taylor Swift has a mean streak going herself on these nominations and awards.
  • Why do you not put “The” in front of Zac Brown Band?
  • Why do they call it “Musical Event of the Year”? It’s really like best guest duo or something like that.
  • You gotta kind of pull for that Band Perry don’t you? They’re so cute.
  • My tail’s waggin that Sara Evans has a nomination for Single of the Year
  • Zac Brown’s You Get What You Give is up for Album of the Year. It doesn’t look to me like they gave much for that album cover though?
  • Anything Loretta Lynn’s nominated for, I’m pulling for that one.
  • And let’s repeat the nominees for Musician of the Year because I love them musicians and you’ll never find a more concentrated group of excellent musicians than in Nashville, Tennessee. Nominees are: Sam Bush for Mandolin, Jerry Douglas for Dobro, Paul Franklin for Steel Guitar, Dann Huff for Guitar, and Mac McAnally for Guitar!

And finally, when oh when are they going to start recognizing the best country music dog with a new category CountryHound of the Year?

What do you think?

I'm Having A Dog Day Summer, How About You?

Webb August 2011 Up Close

Since I turned 5-years-old today I've become a much more inquisitive hound.  There's certain things I just can't sniff out with my nose that I wonder about:

  • Why do they hold the CMA Music Festival so early in the summer?  There's this huge frenzy of activity in Nashville and then it dies down to nothing.  All that's left are the dog days now I guess.
  • Aren't you glad Shania Twain's making a comeback?  I hope that Asian looking guy will still play fiddle for her.  He was good.  And as for that Mutt former husband of hers, he's a dirty dog in my book.
  • On the topic of Shania, can you believe some people thought when she fell and busted her you-know-what on the CMT Music Awards that it was a publicity stunt to get her on the web more and bring attention to her Vegas gig.  Really?  I'm just a dog and I find that hard to believe.  Maybe it was a stunt double?
  • Hasn't Trace Adkins taken his home burning in stride?  Heck, he went on his fishing trip to Alaska.  They did have another home nearby.  Thankfully none of his family was hurt.  How'd you like to be the person to tell Mr. Adkins the faulty power strip that caused it was built by you?
  • What is the deal with Scotty McCreery?  Didn't he used to be on the cover of Mad Magazine?  Personally I like Lauren Alaina.  Anybody with two names is southern.  Aand the waay shee taalks is soo southerrn tooo!
  • While things have died down in Nashville for a while, outside of Tracey Morgan dropping in to drop a few gay jokes, there's plenty going on around the country in country.  George Strait and Alan Jackson have new singles, Trace Adkins has one; Brad Paisley and Kenny Chesney have started new tours with Rascal Flatts cranking up soon.  Heck, they're all touring this summer I guess, that's when you do it.  Maybe I should go on tour.
  • So what are you country music fans up to this summer?

" If I Were A Cat"

Posted by Webb on 03/16/2011

I know it’s not really Reba’s song, it’s Beyonce’s, but just seeing an ad about it on GACTV.com made me wonder what it would be like if I wrote a song like that. So the equivalent for me is “If I Were A Cat”.

If I were a cat
Maybe just for one night
I’d stealth around like nothing
And get into a fight

I’d sit up on that window sill
Look out at birds
You know the drill
Think about which one I’d kill.

If I were a cat
I swear I’d be better than that
I might chase a mouse
If it got in the house

And sure enough
I’d corner it
It’d squeak a lot
and pitch a fit.

I’d let it go
Then catch it again
Just to let it know it can’t come in.
Then release it with a big grin.

If I were a cat
I’d take all those things that make them smart
Put it together with my dog’s heart
And then I’d be the purrfect pet.
One like you ain’t seen just yet.

If I were a cat.

It’s Getting Harder and Harder for Me To Track A Country Song

webb-up-close
Some Bloodhounds, the really good ones, are trained to track the scent of humans. It is very beneficial in finding missing people. I’m not one of those. My specialty is tracking down good country music stories. But lately my olfaction has been thrown off the trail on several occasions.

It seems to be getting harder and harder for me to tell what IS country music, and what is not. Famed songwriter Harlan Howard said a great country song is “three chords and the truth”. I’m not sure how many of today’s hits would fit that description.
Here’s some artists who are throwing me off the scent:
  • Sugarland – country or pop?
  • Kid Rock – hmmm, the name implies another genre of music but he sure is at home in Music City.
  • Lady Antebellum – Do they need country radio now?
  • Uncle Kracker – The guy who got his start spinning for Kid Rock is recording in Nashville now?
  • Taylor Swift – What format is she speaking now?
  • Carrie Underwood – Was country music just a “temporary home” for her? She didn’t even marry an American?
  • Keith Urban – I love those guitar licks, but does he look good in that country format?
  • Reba – Covering Beyonce?

Well we could list more, but we won’t. I’m getting dog-tired here. Now you give me an Alan Jackson, George Jones, Jamey Johnson, Joey + Rory, or Loretta Lynn; and I know what I’m smellin’ there…country music.

So help me out here, what do you think is country music now? Can it be defined? Leave me a comment so I can stay on track. Woof.

Miranda Lambert & Blake Shelton Best Country Couple Ever?

Webb licking.JPG
Miranda and Blake Are Hotter Than A Firecracker.

Ain’t it great to see a modern day country music couple that’s getting-married in love and topping the charts at the same time? Congratulations to Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton. Don’t let it go to your head.

Do you think they’ll be in a class with these famous country music couples?
  • Loretta Lynn & Conway Twitty
  • Tammy Wynette & George Jones
  • Lorrie Morgan & Keith Whitley
  • Dolly Parton and Porter Waggoner
  • June Carter & Johnny Cash
  • Faith Hill & Tim McGraw
  • Trisha Yearwood & Garth Brooks

Who have I left out?

What do you think?

And you thought I just laid around chewing a bone all day.

Seeing the Grammy Awards Makes Me Proud To Be From Nashville

Webb-Countryhound howling edited.jpg

My tail sure was wagging a lot last night when I was watching the Grammy Awards. My home town of Nashville seemed very well represented there, especially by Lady Antebellum and Miranda Lambert. Even though I’ve never written, recorded or performed a country song (I’m a little pitchy), it makes me very proud to be from Nashville, Music City USA.

Seeing Martina McBride and Keith Urban perform was great also.

Actually what I really like though is how Nashville is represented by so much more than country music. I saw Paramore giving out awards, as did Kings of Leon too.

This is the third year in a row that a Nashville affiliated group won record of the year. Kings of Leon picked up that hardware last year, and Alison Krauss and Robert Plant the year before.

Some awards you didn’t see last night that had Nashville affiliations went to Bebe and Cece Winans and The Nashville Symphony.

By far though the big story was Lady Antebellum, who won five Grammy Awards last night. Their mega cross-over hit “Need You Now” was a big winner last night, plus they got to sing it for the second year in a row on the Grammy show. And there’s way too many others to mention, so I’ll just republish this list below.

Here’s a whole list of Nashville-related Grammy wins, according to The Tennessean:

Recording package
Michael Carney, the art director of The Black Keys’ Brothers album. Award goes to Carney, not to the band.

Boxed or special limited edition package

Just "Webb" It

Google is one lucky dog. They’ve got so much going for them. In my 28 (read 4) years of sniffing around this earth, I can’t think of any other business people have come to rely upon so much. Their name is used as a verb. That’s strong.

Actually me and Google have a lot in common you know. We both are known for tracking things down. I do it with my nose. They do it with algorithmns. On yeah, and they change the way they do it from time to time. That’s the part I don’t get.

See, once I know how to track a particular thing down, I always know how to track it down. Google’s not that way. What led them to you yesterday might not work today.

They’re kind of like a poorly trained coonhound. They can track down a raccoon today, but not tomorrow. Or rather they choose not to.
I don’t know about you, but if I were a hunter I don’t know that I’d be too pleased with that.

Now me, give me a whiff of what you want me to find and I’ll fetch it for you, every time. So, I guess, in a way I’m better than Google aren’t I?
So maybe people should use me more to search for stuff?

I’d even be willing to help get some advertisers. I could wear a couple LED signs on either side of me while I’m searching. The messages could be tailored to whatever I’m searching for even!

Well now, this is all sounding pretty good to me. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Google might want to just roll over.

Who knows? Maybe one day soon you’ll hear someone reply to someone else’s question by saying, “Just Webb it”, or maybe “Just Woof it”.

Woof.
