In this weekly feature, exclusively at countryhound.com, I'll offer up my suggestions for the hot new releases of the week. First up, a Maverick and a Brit...

Two outstanding new CDs out today (7/17) are steeped in country tradition, and focused on cover versions of both familiar and obscure country chestnuts. Former Mavericks’ lead singer Raul Malo offers up After Hours, with lush, jazzy takes on everything from Eddy Arnold’s “Welcome to My World” to Dwight Yoakam’s “Pocket of a Clown.” And on the wonderful Upfront & Down Low, British singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson (son of folk-rock legends Richard and Linda Thompson) reworks George Jones (“She Thinks I Still Care”), Ernest Tubb (“Walkin’ the Floor over You”) and Dolly Parton (“My Blue Tears”). The results are tender, twangy, and not to be missed.
