Songwriters Gary Hannan, Phil O’Donnell and Trent Willmon were also honored at the ceremony. The idea for the song came from a picture that Hannan had of himself from his time in the military. According to GACTV.com, he looked at the picture and began thinking of how much he’d changed since that picture was taken. “I looked at myself lookin’ back down at myself, and I had a cocky grin on my face in that picture,” said Hannan. “Man, you’ve learned a lot since back when you knew it all.” He then called Phil O’Donnell to see what he thought of the idea. O’Donnell loved it, and they got Willmon to join them. Eddie Montgomery heard the song shortly after they finished writing it and asked if he and bandmate Troy Gentry could record it for their next album, Some Things Change. The group decided to save the song for their next album, and the rest is chart history.
