Media Coverage of 2008 Olympics in Beijing Stinks Like a Wet Dog

While I give a big, major WOOF to Michael Phelps for his astonishing 8 Gold Medal achievement at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, I would not give the United States media any medal for their overall coverage of the games.

Phelps' achievement is incredibly dog gone good, but there are many other stories unfolding with little or no coverage at the games. So being the Bloodhound that I am, I tracked down a few other pieces of info about the games:

• 63 countries have now won medals, including Togo, Viet Nam, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgistan. Do you know where these countries are?
• As of this writing only 12 countries have won more than 10 medals total
• How about the Jamaicans in track? Usain Bolt's 100m record breaking run was fantastic. And Jamaica SWEPT the women's 100m with Shelly-Ann Fraser taking the gold while her fellow Jamaicans cleaned up the rest of the medals. Pretty good for a laid-back country. IRIE!
• Will China continue its dominance in table tennis?
• France took gold in men's saber!
• Venus and Serena Williams took gold in women's doubles.
• Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson took gold and silver respectively in the women's Individual All-Around gymnastics. That got some attention, but not enough.
• Did you know the U.S's Michael Emmons was one shot away from gold in the 50m Rifle Prone, and he shot the wrong target on his final shot? He finished with a silver.
• While it was big news in Athens when the Men's USA Basketball team lost, have you heard much about how they're slammin' their way through the 2008 Olympics in Beijing? Members from the '04 team LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Carmelo Anthony are leading the USA team, making up for the last team's poor showing.
