Mixing rock with Country Music often draws criticism from fans and media alike, but Allan has continued on to have a successful career. Honesty keeps him and his career on the move. Allan never does spoken interviews and only occasionally answers e-mails. Allan’s interviews stopped in 2004 after his wife Angela killed herself, leaving him to care for their family. After taking a brief amount of time off, Allan returned to music and writing to deal with his grief. His current single, “Learning How To Bend,” talks about how he’s had to change his life and ways to cope with the hardships. “I think my favorite song that I wrote on this album is ‘Learning How to Bend’,” said Allan, according to an article in the Toledo Blade. “I woke up one day with that title. And it’s me, you know – I’m still learning, learning how to bend.” Gary Allan has been in Nashville performing since 1996, after arriving from California. His first single “Her Man” hit #7 on the Country Music charts in 1996. Since then he’s enjoyed success with singles like “The One,” “Man to Man” and “Tough Little Boys” in 2002 and 2003. Seven out of his past nine singles have been in the top ten of the country charts and Allan shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.
