John Dailey and Darrin Vincent of Dailey & Vincent left the 37th Annual Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America awards ceremony on Feb. 6 with a pretty hefty haul of trophies, earning a combined total of seven.
The duo earned the awards of entertaining group, bluegrass band, vocal group and contemporary gospel group of the year. Dailey earned the award of best contemporary voice while Vincent clinched the honor of top bass player. In addition, their album entitled "Dailey & Vincent Sing the Statler Brothers" was voted the album of the year.
Vincent’s bands lead singer, Rhonda Vincent, won the entertainer of the year and best contemporary female vocalist awards.
The Grascals also won their share of awards. They took home trophies for best instrumental group, best mandolin player (to Danny Roberts) and best banjo player (to Kristin Scott Benson).
Songwriters Tom T. and Dixie Hall were the 10-time winners of the songwriter of the year award. By SPBGMA rules, this 10th win will retire them from winning the award again.
"I don't know if this is symbolism or not," said Hall when he came forward to accept the award, "but I just found a penny on my way up here. That's probably the most money that anybody in bluegrass has made today."
