On Tuesday, Kid Rock’s attorney claimed the entertainer was practicing self-defense in a 2007 Atlanta Waffle House brawl that involved the performer, five friends and a man who claims he was beat by Kid Rock for no reason.

Harlen Akins is seeking unspecified punitive damages and $6,000 dollars in medical fees after he got into an early morning fight with Kid Rock that Akins’ lawyer said started when Kid Rock became jealous after Akins was talking to a woman in the performer’s group.

William Horton, the lawyer for Kid Rock and the five others being sued, said Kid Rock’s party consistently tried to defuse the situation but Akins demonstrated “a pattern of provocation and escalation” that led to the fight.

Kid Rock pleaded guilty in March 2008 to a misdemeanor charge of simple battery and Judge Johnny Panos said the civil trial is expected to be completed by the end of the week in Georgia’s Dekalb County Court.
