Brooks & Dunn Reflect On Strange Road Moments

According to GACtv.com, Brooks & Dunn's Kix Brooks told the audience at Nashville's Country Radio Seminar about one of his most memorable stage moments involving a smoke machine. Brooks said he got the idea when they were shooting the music video for "Hard Workin' Man."

“It looked like a leaf blower, but it was actually a smoke machine,” said Brooks. “‘My God, that is awesome! I want that! How much does it cost?’ [The crew member] told me, and I bought it from him.”

After he had the smoke machine, he had to figure out how he was going to incorporate it into one of his shows. He took the idea to Gibson Guitars, where they turned him down, leaving him to make the stage prop himself. He built a guitar out of wood and even painted it with flames. At that time, the duo was closing their shows with "Hard Workin' Man," which was the perfect time to bring out the smoking guitar.

Brooks was so busy hosing down the crowd and his band members at the concert that he didn't realize what kind of mess he was creating. He said, “I didn’t know that the smoke is actually made from vegetable oil!” When the smoke hit air, it returned to its natural oily state and settled on the stage mats, causing both Ronnie & Kix to hit the ground.

Brooks said, “When I busted my ass, I looked over and Ronnie was on his ass, and the guitar player was on his ass, and Ronnie had that look on his face, you know how ice is when it has water on it? It’s not just ice, and you can’t even shuffle your feet. That’s how slick it was, and I saw [Ronnie] try to get up a couple of times, and he was lookin’ at me like, ‘If I ever catch you I will kill you.’”

Brooks & Dunn are hitting the road for their final tour, The Last Rodeo, which will end in Nashville, on Aug. 10. All proceeds from that show will be donated to the Country Music Hall of Fame.
