7/30/2007 Stephen L. Betts Six Degrees of Martina McBride, airing tonight (7/30/07) at 9pm (ET) on ABC, challenges six aspiring artists to prove in six steps—via six people—that they can find someone who knows Martina (to prove the theory that everyone in the world is connected via six people or less). “It was really interesting,” Martina says. “You wonder, 'Is this really going to work?' I mean, really—a total stranger from nowhere can figure out in six steps or less how to find me? It’s a fascinating concept.” If they succeed in reaching Martina, then the aspiring stars have to prove they can also perform…and one of them will receive a recording contract. The program will also trace Martina’s own route to stardom—a path that has taken her from a small town in Kansas to multi-million selling female artist, and the only woman other than Reba McEntire to be named CMA Female Vocalist four times. Miranda Lambert served as a judge for the performance portion of the Six Degrees of Martina McBride competition. Miranda, who knows what it’s like to have a panel of judges help decide your fate from her experience on the first season of Nashville Star, says it was tough to be on the other side of that equation—“I don’t know that I know that I felt like I had a place to judge yet.” She did feel qualified to offer thoughts on people’s performances, though, noting “I’ve been playing in bars since I was 17.”
