Willie Nelson is joining an elite group of Texas musicians who have been selected as the State Musician.

"I consider it a great honor, and I want to thank everyone who helped make it happen," said Nelson, a native of Abbott, Texas.

The bill presented to the State legistlature called Nelson "a legendary Texas performer." It cited his ability to play the guitar at age 6, perform at age 10 and to establish himself in Nashville as a hit songwriter.

"He returned to Texas and soon became world-famous as an interpreter of his own songs and as an icon of the outlaw Country Music movement." Nelson has become an "ever-popular touring concert artist who has been involved in numerous charity events such as FarmAid."

This honor allows Nelson to join a legendary group including Billy Joe Shaver, Ray Benson, Dale Watson and fiddler Johnny Gimble.
