Rather than giving celebrities the traditional artist gift bags, the 2009 CMT Music Awards will make a $20,000 donation that provides meals for 130 children during the 2009-2010 school year. The donation will be given to CMT One Country non-profit partner, Feeding America, and will benefit children in the Middle Tennessee region through the Middle Tennessee’s BackPack Program. In addition to the donation, CMT Music Awards sponsors Sears and Land’s End will donate autographed backpacks for a future CMT One Country online auction.

“CMT One Country is thrilled to participate in the 2009 CMT Music Awards by honoring the artists with a donation on their behalf to the Second Harvest Foodbank of Middle Tennessee,” said Lucia Folk, CMT’s director of public affairs. “Taking something that is normally an extravagant gift and turning it into one that makes a direct impact to people in need is what CMT One Country is all about, especially in these tight economic times.”

As part of the BackPack program, children will be provided with nutritious and easy-to-prepare food to take home on weekends and during school vacations. The Second Harvest Backpack programs are located in areas that have a high incidence of children in need.  Each BackPack will include small pop top entrees, such as beans and franks and chili, cereal, applesauce, a fruit cup, fruit juice, chocolate milk and snacks.

“One in five children in Tennessee are at risk of hunger,” said Jaynee Day, President and CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. “CMT One Country’s continued support of Second Harvest Food Bank and Feeding America makes a tremendous impact in the lives of hungry men, women and children in our community and across America. This donation will help feed at risk children through our BackPack program as we continue to address childhood hunger in our community.”

The 2009 CMT Music Awards premiere on Tuesday, June 16 at 8 p.m., ET.
