2/11/2008 Stephen L. Betts Charley Pride was honored Friday night (2/8) with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the State of Mississippi, presented by Governor Haley Barbour. Charley was one of five recipients who were celebrated for their place in the arts, in culture and in the economic development of the state. Approximately 1,000 people attended the ceremony, which was held at Galloway United Methodist Church in Jackson. After receiving his award, Charley sang the Clay Walker hit “The Chain of Love.” Although Mississippi is best known for the blues, Charley says he heard the sounds of the Grand Ole Opry on the radio, and gravitated toward country music. He credits part of his success with being able to break down barriers of expectation.   According to the Associated Press, Charley was quoted as saying, “My older sister one time said, ‘Why are you singing their music? But we all understand what the y'all-and-us syndrome has been. See, I never as an individual accepted that, and I truly believe that's why I am where I am today.” Charley, whose hits include the pop-country crossover smash, “Kiss an Angel Good Morning,” was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000.
