The “Queen of Country Music,” Kitty Wells, died Monday at her home after complications from a stroke. She was 92 years old.
Mrs. Wells was a trailblazer for females in the country music industry.
Her 1952 breakthrough hit "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels” was the first No. 1 hit by a solo female on the country charts, making her also the first female solo star in country music. For 14 consecutive years Mrs. Wells was country’s top female vocalist, with classic hits including “Making Believe,” “Release Me” and “Amigo’s Guitar.”
Funeral services for Mrs. Wells will be held Friday, July 20 at 1 p.m. at the Hendersonville Church of Christ. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 19 also at the Hendersonville Church of Christ.
Rather than sending flowers, donations will be accepted to the Goodpasture Christian School in Madison, Tenn. by way of the Kitty Wells/Johnnie Wright Scholarship Fund.
